Callicoon Theater In Callicoon,NY

Last weekend I was lucky enough to take a fantastic day trip upstate to Callicoon, NY. It’s a sleepy, picturesque town about two hours northwest of Bergen County, NJ. I spent a whole day there antiquing, eating, and taking in the scenery. Callicoon is hands-down my favorite small town, simply because of the amazing views of the Delaware River.

Our Chalkboard Paint Story

When we moved into our house, our kitchen was painfully outdated (think 70s retro) and did not have a refrigerator. As a new homeowner, with a home that needed some TLC, we couldn’t afford a fancy stainless steel fridge that I was wishing for. We settled for a new, but not at all stylish, Ivory refrigerator. To be exact, the color was called “bisque.” Yikes. Even the name was unappealing. I knew a kitchen remodel was way out of our budget, but a kitchen “refresh” was something we could tackle while we saved for the real-deal remodel.

We painted our awful honey-colored cabinets white, swapped out the old countertops for butcher blocks, and tiled the backsplash. Things were looking pretty good, but that “bisque” fridge was really starting to stick out like a sore thumb. I decided that painting it black might help to contrast against the newly painted antique white cabinets.

I had chalkboard paint on hand from a playroom project that I was working on, and since I’m a total impulse person, I couldn’t wait. I HAD to try it. Almost immediately upon committing to the project I got to work.

Rustic Country Wedding Tablescape

Rustic Country Wedding Tablescape

Over the weekend I was lucky enough to attend a beautiful wedding in Upstate NY, right on historic Route 66. The historical vibe didn’t end there! The ceremony was held in a proper barn, with breathtaking mountain views serving as the backdrop.

The grooms did an incredible job of creating a country-farm theme with an upscale, elegant twist.

Media Cabinet To Play Kitchen Right Side

Media Cabinet To Play Kitchen Front

We were asked if it was possible for us to construct a play kitchen for a young girl’s Christmas gift. Having two small children myself, I couldn’t wait to get started on this project.

At Furniture Rescues we love giving new life to old, tired pieces. Some of the most common furniture items that we see on the side of the road are those bulky, wooden TV media cabinets that were made for the old-style CRT televisions. (The good ol’ days before the flat screen.) The cabinets generally were constructed to have a large spot for the TV, smaller slots that can contain the media components such as stereo systems and VCRs, and a place to keep all of those bulky VCR and cassette tapes. (Sorry to my young readers… Yes, I’m dropping some serious “old folk” terms on you, as you scratch your head wondering what a VCR is.)

Odds are that you or someone in your family still has a TV media cabinet that is collecting dust in a basement and begging for a home or spot on the curb. My parents went a step further… They wall-mounted their flat screen TV right above their old media cabinet. When they gave us an opportunity to create something new out of the media cabinet, we were thrilled!

Steamer Trunk Upcycle

Steamer Trunk Upcycle

When we were tasked with restoring a military steamer trunk belonging to the grandfather of our client, we were honored to be trusted with such a treasured family heirloom. We restored the brass hardware, rivets and closures, painted the trunk to its original color, and left the rustic worn leather straps as they were, to keep a bit of the history alive.

Finished with a custom fitted glass top, our client now has a beautiful and functional piece of family history serving as a coffee table.

Blue Crackle Finish Barn Door

Blue Crackle Finish Barn Door

We loved everything about this barn sliding door project. The client gave us this unfinished custom built door, and explained the vision they had to create a cool contrasting accent for their trendy room. Together, we worked to create a palette, pulling elements from existing artwork and fabrics already in their space, and even incorporated hints of the wall color.

We crackle finished the top color and did some distressing.

Blue Antique China Cabinet

Blue Antique China Cabinet

This piece began as a dark wood antique. It was lovely in its original condition, but we couldn’t resist painting it which really allowed the lines and details to stand out. To achieve this look, we painted the entire piece white, and added heavy light-blue drybrushing to give some depth and dimension. We finished by boldly distressing the edges and details, exposing the dark wood.

A truly one of a kind housewarming gift from her parents. We couldn’t imagine a better piece to house our clients vintage teacup collection.
